This article is extracted from the book of Shaykh Siraj ad-Din (rahimahullah) titled: “Hawla Tafsir Surah al-Kawthar” pages 88-121 and 208-215. In it, he discusses the signs of truly having love for the Messenger of Allah (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), and what it entails. Some of the signs are:

  1. Following the Shari’ah of the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)

Allāh Taʿālā says: {Say (O Prophet): “If you really love Allāh, then follow me, and Allāh shall love you and forgive you your sins. Allāh is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.”} [Qur’an 3:31]

Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din explains: “Thus, Allāh Taʿālā has made the obedience of the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) and following him in one’s life a sign of having love for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam). Accordingly, Allāh Taʿālā has made the reward for this obedience, attaining the love of Allāh Taʿālā, and His forgiveness.”

  1. Honouring and revering the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)

Allāh Taʿālā says: {Indeed, We have sent you (O prophet,) as a witness and as a bearer of good news and as a warner, so that you (O people,) believe in Allah and His Messenger, and support him and revere him, and pronounce His (Allah’s) purity morning and evening.} [Qur’an 33:46]

Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din explains: “This verse is a sign upon the necessity of showing respect and reverence to the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) over everyone else. The more that one’s love increases for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), the more will one’s respect increase for him.”

  1. Expressing reverence when he (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) is mentioned, and showing good etiquette and humility when he is mentioned, and when his Ahadith are read.

To explain the love that the Companions and the Successors had for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din mentions: “Imām Mālik (raḥimahullāh) was asked about a narrator ‘Abu Ayyub as-Sakhtiyani’ to which he mentioned that Abu Ayyub had performed two pilgrimages. Then he said: ‘I would always be with him and I would see that whenever the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) was mentioned, he would cry out of love for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) until I would feel sorry for him.’”

Imām Mālik (raḥimahullāh) himself was also like this. Mus‘ab ibn ‘Abd Allah, one of the narrators of Imām Mālik (raḥimahullāh) would say that whenever the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) would be mentioned in front of Imām Mālik, his face would change colour, and he would bend down.” One day when he was asked regarding this, he answered: “Had you seen what I have seen, you would not have found an issue with what I do. I would see Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir – one of his teachers – the leader of the Qurrā’; we would not ask him regarding any hadith, except that he would cry, until we felt sorry for him.”

Other signs he mentioned are:

  • Visiting his (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)’s grave; as one of the signs of a lover to his beloved is visiting them excessively.
  • Loving the family of the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam),
  • Loving the companions of the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam),
  • Excessively sending alāt and salām upon the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)
