About Course
Al-Manẓūmat al-Bayqūniyyah is a concise educational poem of 34 lines that introduces the foundational categories of muṣṭalaḥ al-ḥadīth. Although brief, it offers a structured overview of the principal classifications used in evaluating ḥadīth reports, including continuity and discontinuity, levels of authenticity, and distinctive forms such as gharīb, ʿazīz, and mashhūr. Its clarity and brevity make it one of the most widely studied introductory texts in ḥadīth methodology, and it is often memorised by students at the beginning of their training.
The poem’s pedagogical value has encouraged scholars across generations to produce commentaries on it. Among the most refined is the commentary of the distinguished Syrian ḥadīth scholar ʿAbd Allāh Sirāj ad-Dīn. His explanation analyses each couplet with precision, references earlier authorities, and provides clear definitions, careful distinctions, and brief contextual notes on the development of terminology (muṣṭalaḥ). He also includes discussion of several categories not explicitly mentioned in the original poem. This edition is fully vowelised for ease of reading, with the text summarised at the end.
This commentary provides an accessible entry point for beginners while maintaining sufficient rigour to serve as a bridge to more advanced works such as Muqaddimat Ibn aṣ-Ṣalāḥ and Nukhbat al-Fikar. It remains a valued contribution to the long pedagogical tradition of ḥadīth studies.
