Today we will continue with our discussion on the books that are linked to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and this will be our last week to discuss Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. (Even though there is so much to discuss, we have to move on, and of course, we could not mention all the important points.)
Next week, in shā Allāh, we will commence with Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, and probably we will continue with that for more than two months, and then learn about Sunan Ibn Nasaī until the end of the year.
Abridgements of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
Many earlier scholars summarised Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, either by deleting the chains and quoting the narrations directly from the Ṣaḥābī, or by deleting all the repetitions. If a person cannot study or memorise the entire book, then these books are ideal. A few of these are:
- Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Muḥammad ibn ‘Abdillāh ibn Tawmart (d. 524 AH)
The manuscript of this is available, but it has not been typed out or printed.
- Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Muḥammad ibn Sharf al-Mursī (d. 555 AH)
- Talkhīs Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Aḥmad ibn ‘Umar al-Qurṭubī (d. 656 AH).
This was first printed with the Taḥqīq of Rif‘at Fawzī and it was published by Dār ibn as-Salām. It was then printed with the Taḥqīq of Sa’d ibn ‘Abdillāh al-Ḥumayd and it was published in 2019 by Markaz Dalāil and also by Dār at-Taṣīl.
In truth, since there is no discussion on the narrators any way in the final year, it is better to study this book properly rather than rush through Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, as is generally done.
‘Allāmah Aḥmad al-Qurṭubī then wrote a commentary on this Talkhīṣ of his and that is titled: al-Mufhim Limā Ushkila Min Talkhīṣ Kitāb Muslim. This is a brilliant book to get the meanings of the narrations of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
This book was written specially for students. The author mentioned in the introduction:
فلما حصل من تلخيص كتاب مسلم وترتيبه وتبويبه المأمول، وسهل إلى حفظه وتحصيله الوصول: رأينا أن نكمل فائدته للطالبين، ونسهل السبيل إليه على الباحثين؛ بشرح غريبه، والتنبيه على نكت من إعرابه، وعلى وجوه الاستدلال بأحاديثه، وإيضاح مشكلاته حسب تبويبه، وعلى مساق ترتيبه، فنجمع فيه ما سمعناه من مشايخنا، أو وقفنا عليه في كتب أئمتنا، أو تفضل الكريم الوهاب بفهمه علينا على طريق الاختصار، ما لم يدع الكشف إلى التطويل والإكثار، حرصا على التقريب والتسهيل، وعونا على التفهم والتحصيل (المفهم لما أشكل من تلخيص كتاب مسلم – 1 / 83)
Therefore, in the final year, when there is an overload of information over 10 hours of study for six days a week, it might be best to confine oneself to the talkhīṣ with the information within this commentary, and the information in Fatḥ al-Mulhim. We will discuss ahead how so many scholars relied on this commentary when writing a commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
This commentary has been printed by Dār Ibn Kathīr with the Tahqīq of four editors and it is in seven volumes. This was in 1996 AH. Recently, in 2017, it was revised and published for the seventh time with the same taḥqīq (research), and hence it will be best to get this copy.
- Al-Jāmi’ al-Mu’lim Bi Maqāṣīd Jāmi’ Muslim of ‘Allāmah Zakiyy ad-Dīn ‘Abdul ‘Aḍīm ibn ‘Abdul Qawiyy al-Mundhirī (d. 656 AH).
This is another great condensation and summary that is also written by an expert.
This was printed with the Taḥqīq of Albānī and published by al-Maktab al-Islāmī in 1987 in 663 pages, and it was published again in 2003 by Dār al-Ḥadīth in Cairo with the Taḥqīq of ‘Iṣām ad-Dīn aṣ-Ṣubāṭī in around 720 pages. The best print is by Ṭāriq ibn ‘Iwaḍallāh, and it is published by Dār ibn al-Jawzī.
There are also commentaries that are written for this, for example: As-Sirāj al-Wahhāj Min Kashf Mutālib Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj of Siddīq Ḥasan Khān (d. 1307). This is an average commentary, and that is why we prefer the combination of the Talkhīṣ of ‘Allāmah Qurṭubī with his commentary.
- Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Imām Nawawī (d. 679 AH).
This is published by Dār an-Nawādīr with the Taḥqīq of ‘Abdul Ḥamīd and ‘Abdul ‘Alīm ad-Darwesh.
- Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Kirmānī (d. 833 AH)
- Mukhtaṣar Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Ismā ‘īl ibn ‘Abdillāh al-Iskadārī (d. 1082 AH)
- Ikhtiṣār Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Aḥmad ibn ‘Ali ibn Mushrif (d. 1285 AH)
This is available in manuscript form.
Books on the Narrators of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
There are dedicated books that are written on the narrators of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Amongst others, the following are the more famous books:
- Tasmiyyah Man Akhraja hum al-Bukhārī wa Muslim wa man farada bihi Kullu Wāḥid Minhumā of Imām Ḥākim (d. 405 AH)
This is printed by Dār al-Jinān with the Taḥqīq of Kamāl Yūsuf al-Ḥūt.
2. Rijāl Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. This was written by Abū Bakr, Aḥmad ibn Manjūyah al-Aṣbahānī (d. 428 AH)
This is the most popular book to check up on the narrators of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. It is printed with the Taḥqīq of ‘Abdullāh al-Laythī and it is published by Dār al-Ma’rifah in 1407. It is in two volumes.
It was also printed by Dār al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah with the Taḥqīq of Shaykh Muḥammad Ismā‘īl and Aḥmad Farīd al-Mazīdī. This is in 712 pages.
3. Al-Jam’ Bayna Rijāl aṣ-Ṣīḥayn of Muḥammad ibn Ṭāhir al-Maqdisī (d. 507 AH)
4. Al-Minhāj Fī Rijāl Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj, written by ‘Abdullāh ibn Aḥmad al-Ishbīlī (d. 522 AH)
5. Rijāl Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj of Abūl ‘Abbās, Aḥmad ibn Ṭāhir al-Anṣārī ad-Dānī (d. 532 AH)
6. Tasmiyyah Rijāl Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim alladhīna Infaradah Bihim Muslim ‘anil Bukhārī, by ‘Allāmah Dhahabī (Abū ‘Abdllāh, Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ‘Uthmān (d. 748 AH)

7. Al-Mu’lim bi Asmā Shuyūkh al-Bukhārī wa Muslim of Muḥammad ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Khalfūn (d. 636 AH)
8. Asmā Rijāl Muslim of ‘Abdullāh aṭ-Ṭayyib (d. 947 AH)
9. Khulāṣah al-Qawl al-Mufhim ‘alā Tarājim Jāmi’ al-Imām Muslim of Muḥammad Amīn ibn ‘Abdillāh al-Hararī (d. 1441 AH).
This is published by Dār al-Minhāj in 1434. It is in two volumes and in total it comprises of 1456 pages.
‘Allāmah Abū ‘Alī al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad al-Ghassānī wrote Taqyīd al-Muhmal wa Tamyīz al-Mushkīl on the difficulties in the chains of Ṣaḥīḥayn. It was printed in 1421 with the Taḥqīq of Shaykh ‘Alī ‘Umrān, and it was published by Dār ‘Ālam al-Fawāid.
Additions to Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
Imām Muslim did not add each and every Ṣaḥīḥ narration within his book. Rather, he added what ‘they agreed upon. He mentioned:
قال: ليس كل شيء عندي صحيح وضعته ها هنا، إنما وضعت ها هنا ما أجمعوا عليه. (صحيح مسلم 2/ 15)
We explained this in detail in lesson 22.
Thus, some scholars wrote Mustadrakāt (narrations that an author could have mentioned but he did not mention):
- Al-Ilzāmāt of Imām Dāra quṭnī (d. 385 AH)
The best print is by Dār al-Āthār with the Taḥqīq of Muqbīl Wādi’ī.
2. Al-Mustadrak ‘alā aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn of Imām Ḥākim (d. 405 AH)
There are many prints for this. Amongst the best is the Dār al-Minhāj al-Qawīm, since they typed it and cross-checked it with eight manuscripts.
3. There are additional narrations in the Mustakhraj books, for example, Abū ‘Awānah quotes a lot of additional narrations in his Mustakhraj.
Commentaries on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
There are approximately 90 known commentaries written on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
The more famous ones are:
- At-Taḥrīr Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Muḥammad ibn Qiwām as-Sunnah Ismāil al-Aṣbaḥānī (d. 526)
This is the very first official commentary that was being written for Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Before this, there was the books on the Rijāl, the Mustadarak, a book that explained the difficult words (we will speak about later), etc. This is actually a completion of his son’s commentary. His son commenced writing a commentary on Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim but he passed away when he was still young. His father, Qiwām as-Sunnah (d 535 AH). then completed his commentary.
Imām Nawawī quotes from this book, but then subsequent commentators did not quote from it, making it seem as if they did not have access to it. Fortunately, a portion from the second half has been found recently printed with the Taḥqīq of Ibrāhīm Āyat Bākhah by Asfār in Kuwait.
From the quotations that Imām Nawawī chose and from this portion that is printed, it is clear that this is a very excellent commentary of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
2. Al-Mufhim Li Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Shaykh Abīl Ḥasan ‘Abdul Ghāfir ibn Ismā‘īl al-Fārisī (d. 529 AH)
This is printed by Asfār in 3 volumes with the Taḥqīq of Mashūr ibn Marzūq al-Ḥarāzī.
3. Al-Mu’lim Bi Fawāid Muslim, of Abū ‘Abdillāh, Muḥammad ibn ‘Ali al-Māzirī (d. 536 AH)
This is a very important commentary of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, although it was initially not an official book. ‘Allāmah Māzirī was conducting lessons on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and his explanation was documented. That then became a documented commentary.
This is published with the Taḥqīq of Muḥammad an-Nayfar, and it was published by ad-Dār at-Tunīsiyyah.
4. Ikmāl al-Mu’lim Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, written by Qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ ibn Mūsā al-Yaḥṣubī. (d. 544 AH)
This is actually a completion of two books. The editor, Shaykh Muḥammad Nayfar says:
خص القاضي عياض اسم الكتاب بـ “إكمال المعلم” ولم يسمهبـ “إكمال المعلم، وتقييد المهمل” إظهارا لما لهذا الشرح من مزية وإن كان كتابه إكمالا للمعلم ولتقييد المهمل. (مقدمة المعلم بفوائد مسلم – 1 / 202)
He also mentioned:
وهذا الكتاب أراد به القاضي عياض أن يكمل ما يتعلق بهذا الكتاب الأم وهو صحيح مسلم من جميع الوجوه لأنه لم تصرف له العناية كما صرفت لغيره. (مقدمة المعلم بفوائد مسلم – 1 / 200)
This book could be considered as the first properly revised and well organised commentary of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. It was the primary source for Imām Ibn aṣ-Ṣalāḥ, Imām Nawawī, and many scholars after that.
There are many prints of this book. Amongst others are the following:

5. Ṣiyānah Ṣaḥīḥ Muslmi minal Ikhlāl wal Ghalaṭ wa Ḥimāyatihī minal Isqāt of ‘Allāmah Ibn aṣ-Ṣalāḥ (d. 643 AH)
From the name it is clear that this is not an actual commentary on the Ṣaḥīḥ; rather ‘Allāmah Ibn aṣ-Ṣalāḥ mainly attempted to correct errors, omissions, inaccuracies, and the likes that have occurred in the Ṣaḥīḥ from different scribes and in different copies of the Ṣaḥīḥ.
This is incomplete, but through his introduction, he persevered knowledge that is not found anywhere else, making it very important for every student of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
It is published by Dār al-Gharb al-Islāmī with the taḥqīq (research) of Muwaffaq ibn ʿAbdillāh ibn ʿAbd al-Qādir, by Dār al-Ḥadīth wa ’s-Sunnah, and by DKI with the taḥqīq (research) of Farīd ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Jundī. It has been published by Dār al-Ma’rifah.
6. Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Sibṭ ibn al-Jawzī (d. 654 AH)
7. Minhāj al-Muḥaddithīn wa Sabīl Ṭālibīhi al-Muḥaqqiqīn Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Abīl Ḥusayn Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjājj al-Qushayrī (known in short as: al-MinhāJ), written by Imām Nawawī (Abū Zakariyyā, Muḥyī ad-Dīn, Yaḥyā ibn Sharah an-Nawawī (d. 676 AH)
This became the most accepted commentary and it is the most famous commentary of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Many scholars consider it to be the best and the most comprehensive commentary. In Syria, students read this commentary with Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (meaning that they study Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim with sufficing on the information from this one commentary – which is fine for Shāfi’īs).
Imām Nawawī incorporated most of Qāḍī ʿIyād’s commentary and he quotes a lot from the other commentaries before him. He explained every narration in detail. He discusses the chains of transmission, grammatical points, the ambiguous or unknown names of narrators, the issues and verdicts that can be extracted from the ḥadīth, those who have taken the ḥadīth as their evidence and those who have opposed it, the ruling within the Shāfi’ī Madhab, other applicable and direct or even slightly indirect rulings within the Shāfi’ī Madhab, etc.
There are many prints of this book. The best print is the one published by Dār al-Minhāj al-Qawīm in 1441 with the Taḥqīq of Māzin ibn ‘Abdillāh Sirsāwī. He used more than thirty manuscripts to ensure the accuracy of what he typed out. In total, it is in 15 volumes. Dr. Bashshār ʿAwwād Maʿrūf and Dr. Ibrāhīm al-Lāḥim both praised this edition.
8. Ikmāl Ikmāl al-Mu’lim Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ al-Imām Muslim of Abīr Rūḥ, ‘Īsā ibn Mas ‘ūd az-Zawāwī al-Jazāirī (d. 743 AH)
I have not had access to this book, but from the title, I assume that it is a completion of Qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ’s book.
Keep in mind between this book with this name, and a book with a similar name coming ahead.
This was published with the Taḥqīq of ‘Amār Basṭah and Muṣṭafā Ḍayf, and it was published by Dār at-Tawfīqiyyah.
9. Faḍl al-Mun’im Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Qāḍī Shams ad-Dīn al-Harawī (d. 829)
This was printed by a group of researchers and it was published by Dār an-Nawādir. This is in six volumes.
10. Ikmāl Ikmāl al-Mu’lim, written by Abū ‘Abdillāh, Muḥammad ibn Khalīfah Ubayy al-Mālikī al-Washtānī, (d. 827 AH.
In this commentary, he gathered the commentaries of Māzirī, ‘Iyāḍ, Qurṭubī and Nawawī, but he paraphrased what they said. Shaykh Muḥammad an-Nayfar mentioned:
اعتنى العلامة التونسي أبو عبد الله محمد بن خَلْفة الأبي بشرح مسلم فجمع فيه شروحه الأربعة للمازري وعياض والقرطبي والنووي مع زيادات مكملة والتنبيه على المواضع المشكلة من كلام هؤلاء، والتزم النقل بالمعنى دون اللفظ، لكنه لم يستوعب كلام صاحب المعلم وبالأخص فيما يخص اللغة يحذف الشواهد. (مقدمة المعلم بفوائد مسلم – 1 / 203)
It was published in 1327 by Maṭba’ah as-Sa’ādah. Dār al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah also published it with the next commentary.
11. Mukammil Ikmāl al-Kamāl of Muḥammad ibn Yūsūf as-Sanūsī (d. 895 AH)
He mentioned in the introduction:
وكان من أحسن شروحه (أي مسلم بن الحجاج) فيما علمت وأجمعها شرح الشيخ العلامة أبي عبد الله الأبي رحمه الله تعالى ورضي عنه، أردت أن أتعلق بأذيال القوم … فاختصرت في هذا التقييد المبارك معظم ما في هذا الشرح الجامع من الفوائد. وضممت إليه كثيراً مما أغفله مما هو كالضروري لا كالرائد وأكملته أيضاً بشرح الخطبة
Shaykh Muḥammad an-Nayfar mentioned:
وسماه: بـ”مكمّل الإِكمال”. وهو مقدمة مضافة لما قام به الأبي. فكان هذان الشرحان من أتم الإِفادات على مسلم، وأظهره مع شرح الأبي السلطان عبد الحفيظ ملك المغرب الأقصى كما تقدم. وهذان الشرحان يبديان الطريقة المغربية في شرح الحديث النبوي. (مقدمة المعلم بفوائد مسلم – 1 / 204)
It is printed with the previous book.
12. Ad-Dībāj ‘Alā Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj of ‘Allāmah Jalāl ad-Dīn as-Suyūṭī (d. 911 AH)
This is a very brief commentary and ‘Allāmah Suyūṭi hardly discusses any of the juridical rulings nor does he respond to seemingly contradictory narrations.
This was printed by Dār al-Arqam and it is in six volumes with the Taḥqīq of Muḥammad ‘Adnān Darwesh. In the annotations of this print the editors included al-Ḥall al-Mufhim of Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmad Gangohi, and they also included the footnotes of Mawlānā Zakariyyā Kāndlawī.
13. The commentary of Shaykh Zakariyyā al-Anṣārī (d. 926 AH)

15. Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of ‘Abdur Raūf al-Munāwī (d. 1031 AH)
16. ‘Ināyah al-Mun‘im Li Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim by ‘Abdullāh ibn Muḥmmad Yūsuf Afandī Zādā Ḥilmī (d. 1167 AH)
17. Al-Ḥall al-Mufhim Li Mushkilāt Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmad Gangohī (d. 1323)
This is simply beneficial points that were gathered by Shaykh Muḥammad Yaḥyā Kāndlawī and then Mawlānā Zakariyyā Kāndlawī added beneficial footnotes. It is printed by Dār al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah with the Taḥqīq of Shaykh Taqiyyud Dīn Nadwī. It is in two volumes.
18. Minnah al-Mun‘īm of Ṣafiyy ar-Raḥmān Mubarakpūrī (d. 1362 AH)

23. Al-Baḥr al-Muḥīt ath-Tajjāj Fī Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim ibn al-Ḥajjāj b Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī al-Ithyawbī
Books on the Explanation of the Gharīb Word of Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
One could refer to the following books to get the meaning of difficult words:
- Tafsīr Gharīb Mā Fī aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥayn by Muḥammad ibn Abī Naṣr al-Ḥumaydī (d. 488 AH)
It was printed with the Taḥqīq of Zubaydah Muḥammad and it was published by Maktabah as-Sunnah in 1415. It is in 680 pages.

The full name of this book is:
مطالع الأنوار على صحاح الآثار في فتح ما استغلق من كتاب الموطأ والبخاري ومسلم وإيضاح مبهم لغاتها وبيان المختلف من أسماء رواتها وتمييز مشكلها وتقييد مهملها.
Researchers at an organisation called Dār al-Falāḥ made research of it, and it was published by the Wizārah al-Awqāf Wash Shu ‘ūn al-Islāmiyyah of Qatar in 1433 /2012.
5. Al-Mufṣiḥ al-Mufhim wal-Muḍih al-Mulhim Li Ma’ānī Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim of Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Anṣārī (d. 646 AH)
This is published in 2010 with the Taḥqīq of Riḍwān Jāmi’ Riḍwān
6. Taḥfatul Munjidi wal Mufhim Fī Gharīb Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim by Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-‘Ajamī (d. 841 AH)
This was published by Muassassah ‘Ilm Li Iḥyā at-Turāth al-‘Arabī in 1438. It is in 2 volumes and in a total of 1175 pages.
7. Kitāb Qurrah al-‘Ayn Fī Ḍabṭ Asmā Rijāl aṣ-Ṣiḥīḥayn
‘Abdul Ghanī ibn Aḥmad al-Baḥrānī. Maktabah at-Tawbah.

This concludes our discussion on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. Of course, there are many other important points that we could not discuss. If anyone is in a position of teaching Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, then together with our notes, he should also refer to the following:
