This article is extracted from the book of Shaykh Siraj ad-Din (rahimahullah) titled: “Hawla Tafsir Surah al-ʿAlaq.” pages 126-158. In it, he discusses the ways in which Allāh Taʿālā has protected the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) from his enemies, and punished those who tried to harm him.

Allāh Taʿālā says: {So, proclaim what you have been commanded, and turn away from the polytheists. Surely, We will be sufficient for you against the mockers} [Qur’an 15:94-95]

It has been reported from Ibn ‘Abbas (raḍī Allāhu ʿanh) that the verse: “We will be sufficient for you against the mockers,” “mockers” refers to al-Walid ibn al-Mughira, al-Aswad ibn ‘Abd Yaghuth, al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib, Harith as-Sahmi, and al-‘As ibn Wa’il. When Jibril (alayhissalam) came to the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), he complained to him about the mockers, Jibril told him to point them out to him. Every time he would point one out, Jibril would point to a specific body part of his, and say “I have sufficed him.” The outcome of this was that all the mockers died in humiliating and painful ways.

Allāh Taʿālā also says: {And [remember, O Muḥammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.} [Qur’an 8:30]

Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din explains: “In this verse, Allāh Taʿālā expresses his grace upon the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), and His defence for him, and His protection of him from his enemies when he was in Makkah and wanted to migrate to Madinah.”

It has been related in the Musnad of Imam Bazzar from the hadith of Abu Mus‘ab al-Makki who says: “I have met Zaid ibn Arqam, al-Mughira ibn Shu’bah, Anas ibn Malik (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhum), and they all say said that when the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) spent the night in the cave, Allah commanded a tree to grow at the entrance of the cave, which concealed the face of the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam), and Allah also commanded a spider to make a cobweb.”

Allāh Taʿālā expresses this in the Qur’an: {If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)] – Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam)] said to his companion, “Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.” And Allah sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah – that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.} [Qur’an 9:40]
