This article is extracted from the book of Shaykh Siraj ad-Din (rahimahullah) titled: “Hawla Tafsir Surah al-Kawthar” pages 41-50. In it, he discusses the necessity of having love for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) upon every Muslim, more than everything else.
Allāh Taʿālā says: {Say, “If your fathers and your sons and your brothers and your spouses and your clan and the wealth you have earned and the trade you apprehend will recede and the homes you like are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and Jihād in His way, then, wait until Allah comes with His command. Allah does not lead the sinning people to the right path.”} [Qur’an 9:24]
Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din explains: “This verse is explicit upon the necessity of having love for Allāh Taʿālā and His Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam). It has come in the hadith of Anas (raḍī Allāhu ʿanh): “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness of faith: (1) The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else, (2) Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake, and (3) Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 16]
In another hadith, the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) has said: “By Him in Whose Hands my life is, none of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father and his children.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 14] Thus, faith demands that one’s love for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) should be more than everything.
Allāh Taʿālā says: {The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers.} [Qur’an 33:6]
Shaykh Abdullah Siraj ad-Din explains: “Thus, the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) is more merciful to the believers than themselves, more caring, more concerned, and more desirous [of their success].” Therefore, it is necessary for the believers to have love for the Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam). How can we not love him more than everything, when he is the most beloved of all the creation of Allah? The Prophet (ṣal Allāhu ʿalaihi wa sallam) informed us himself when he said, “Listen! I am the beloved of Allah, and I do not say this out of pride, and I am the most honourable of the creation of Allah, and I do not say this out of pride.”
